Favorite Tool: Magnetic Cable Ties
Laura Mina introduced me to silicone magnetic cable ties, and they have become one of my favorite tools.
Obviously they’re useful as cable ties, but I also really like them as very gentle clamps. They aren’t as strong as rare earth magnets, the silicone cover gives them a bit of cushion, and they are easy to pull apart because of the connection. However, I do always use a barrier of some kind between the object and the cable tie.
One of my favorite applications is sandwiching humidified lace trim between strips of stiff mylar and holding in place with these magnets to flatten.
When I need a stronger connection, but still want the properties of the silicone tie, I add a rare earth magnet on top to strengthen.
There are two different lengths that I like to use, a “regular” length, and a shorter length meant for earbuds.
I’ve used the ones I linked and like them. If you can find non-amazon versions let me know!
